Moving on from the success with the band The Walker Brothers, Scott Walker began to indulge in his solo material with his debut self-titled album. With a surprising change in direction, Walker found himself lending his undeniably powerful baritone to outlandish baroque pop songs created with orchestral arrangements and a sense of flamboyant showmanship. His own material is present, yet scattered amongst covers of material from his idol Jacques Brel, as well as Tim Hardin, Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann.
