The immense power and emotion apparent in ‘The Drift’ undoubtedly sets Scott Walker out as one of the most influential and most esoteric figures of our age, a songwriter with an astonishing appetite for experimentation and earnest eye for the romantic days of European poetry. Originally recorded in late 2004 and then released in 2006, ‘The Drift’ packs in a wild array of instruments – flugelhorn, tubax, shawm and a 36-piece string orchestra, amongst others – the final result is as eclectic as it would suggest, veering deliriously through baroque statements and dark, insistent sentiment.
