Lovely old reissue from Southern Lord here. Sunn O)))’s White2 was recorded in the same sessions as 2003’s White1 but didn’t see daylight until a year later. There are undoubted similarities between the records - the strange, avant, at times almost concrete-ish ‘bassAliens’ clearly carries the same spirit of invention as much of White1’s obtuse pieces. However, White2 contains more of the monolithic drone metal that one usually associates with Stephen O’Malley’s group. Closer ‘DECAY2 [NIHILS’ MAW]’, for instance, is a 25-minute masterclass in the loud and long. As with the concurrent reissue of White1, this latest edition of White2 has been remastered by Matt Colton. He boosts the low end and refines the mix.
