Southern Lord’s Caspar Brötzmann Massaker reissues series continues with the group’s fourth LP, 1993’s Koksofen (Blast Furnace). Even for a band whose sound is as heavy as Caspar Brötzmann Massaker, Koksofen is a punishing listen. The influence of artists like fellow Berliners Einstürzende Neubauten is clear in Brötzmann’s screeching guitar textures, but so too is the stark power of doom and sludge metal. Koksofen is industrial metal in the truest sense.
