Der Abend Der Schwarzen Folklore, the third LP from Caspar Brötzmann and his band Massaker, is one of the great examples of late-20th-century art-rock. Brötzmann is a highly inventive guitarist, his playing style mixing the heft of metal with Blixa Bargeld’s uncompromising noise and Adrian Belew’s invention. On 1992’s Der Abend Der Schwarzen Folklore he leads his band through four instrumentals that sound like the mid-point between Sunn O))) and Bargeld’s Einstürzende Neubauten. Southern Lord reissuing this LP makes sense.
