Four Tet

Four Tet

Four Tet, the long-running solo project of Londoner Kieran Hebden, first emerged in the late-90s. At this point, the jazz-influenced electronics which bore the Four Tet name seemed like a logical extension of Hebden’s work in the post-rock band Fridge. However, down the years Four Tet has come to be Hebden’s principal project, with the producer putting out new music at a steady clip across the last two decades. While all of Four Tet’s music has an organic quality to it, the project’s sound has changed considerably over time. Those early jazz-tinged records soon morphed into something that became known in the music press as folktronica, and full-lengths such as Rounds (2003) were yoked together with contemporaneous releases by Caribou and Gravenhurst.

By the time that the 2010s rolled around, Four Tet releases had become increasingly focused on the dancefloor - while 2009’s celebrated There Is Love In You still maintained some of the earthiness of those early LPs, Beautiful Rewind (2013) retooled the sounds of pirate radio for the Four Tet universe. More recent Four Tet drops have found a middle ground between all of those previous styles while also demonstrating influences from the worlds of spiritual jazz and new-age music.

Hebden also often busies himself with collaborative projects - Burial, Thom Yorke, Martyn and DJ Champion are just some of those Hebden has linked with down the years. Big-name acts like Grimes and Rihanna have called Hebden in on remix duties, and Hebden has been at the controls to produce albums by Jamie xx, Omar Souleyman, Roots Manuva and Neneh Cherry.
