Műfajok

Crucial reissue of highly valuable Arthur Russell recordings, originally released on Philip Glass’ Chatham Square label in 1983, three years before his influential World of Echo album. Conducted by Julius Eastman who collaborated with Russell on most of his orchestral works, these instrumental soundscapes are another showcase of the cellist’s great compositional talent, and sadly came to be his final orchestral effort. Initially intended to accompany a staging of Medea, but then discarded due to quarrels between the people involved, Tower of Meaning contains only a fragment of the original score, and none of its vocal parts. Yet, its effects are all the more meditative — with the strings and wood instruments playing modal harmonies, everything seems in constant flux, occasional sprouts of dissonance and caesuras causing captivating tension.
