A magnificent document of an enigmatic musician at his most vulnerable, Arthur Russell’s World of Echo recasts some of his beloved singles in nothing more than cello, voice, and cavernous echoes. Often considered the late artist’s most personal work, World Of Echo strips away most of the disco signifiers, leaving very little cover for Russell’s fragile tenor. What’s left is his attempt at “the most vivid rhythmic reality.” And yet, there are flashes of movement in the brassy swells of tunes like ‘She’s The Star’ and ‘Wax The Van’. A singular release that highlights the bewitching nature of Arthur Russell’s timeless music.
