With his incredibly fertile period of 1995 and 96 came one of Haruomi Hosono’s more elusive works both in availability and sound. N.D.E captures a range that only the pioneering producer can: slurred, swirling dub rhythms rise from the lowest depths to heights of blissful ambient harmonies, skipping tabla percussion matches bubbling synth echoes in between gentle gamelan waves and sorrowful strings. ‘Heliotherapy’ is breezy and free spirited, with electronics warmly humming, beeping, gliding, while drum machine glitters in ‘Edge Of The End’ foreshadow the rolling stomps that break the stillness apart.
