As the early aughts fashion revival continues to percolate around the world, it’s about time to revisit the soundtrack to the halcyon days. The one group that encapsulates the era best would be UK party-starters Basement Jaxx. Their blend of classic American midwest house and Latin pop (among many, many other genres) is a near perfect blend of the trendiest dancefloor-filling sounds of the era. What perfect timing then for XL Recordings to reissue Basement Jaxx’s first two LPs on vinyl for the very first time in the US. Rooty, the 2001 sophomore LP was named after their positively bacchanalian Bristol club nights and it folded even more disparate influences like jazz, punk, and funk into the mix, spawning several smash singles. A blueprint for the maximalist crossover electronica that eventually took hold in the UK and abroad, Rooty remains a beloved piece of club (and pop) history.
