Owing to its ubiquity in sports coverage and emotive nature documentaries, it’s easy to forget the earth-moving power of ‘Hoppípolla’, as well as the other glossy, soaring post-rock gems that populate Icelandic group Sigur Rós’ 2005 LP Takk. Translating to “thank you” in the band’s native tongue, Takk is a vast statement of open-armed gratitude, the sonic equivalent of standing on the top of a mountain and absorbing the gorgeous landscape below. Vocals tickle the upper register, as instruments bloom outwards into resplendent, celebratory paeans to joy. It’s an album of deep nostalgia for moments that have not yet happened.
