Motohiko Hamase’s Anecdote, here reissued by WRWTFWW, is an unusual album which ties together many threads floating around in avant-garde music at the end of the 80s - jazz fusion, new age, fourth world, electronic composition. Backed by his associates Toshio Kaji and Yasunori Yamaguchi, this live album (recorded in 1987, first released in 1993) finds the crew reimagining Hamase’s studio takes in a unique and arresting manner. Anecdote’s exploratory tuned percussion sections nod to previous WRWTFWW reissues from Midori Takada and Yasuaki Shimizu, but Hamase’s approach is far more rooted in the experimental potential of jazz than either of those artists.
