Anyone cognisant of boundary-pushing 1990s electronic music — usually of the glitched out, clicked and cut variety — knows the name: oval, and understands that the German project’s forward-facing clairvoyance meant an uncanny vision of what the genre would eventually transform into. Years later, project head Markus Popp is still mining rare veins of sound and colour on sixteenth LP Scis. Shifting a focus onto sweetly melodic forms — without sacrificing any wayward experimentation — Scis is a boldly meditative work of glitched out electronic, systemic spaces filled in with plethora of software-based traditional instruments. It’s future, it’s past.
