Knitting Factory Records’ reissuing of Fela Kuti’s back catalogue, almost in its entirety, has given a sense of the scope and vision of the Afrobeat legend’s work and its enduring impact. From the shake-inducing toms and clicking wood blocks which open 1986’s ‘Teacher Don’t Teach Me Nonsense’, the album feels like vintage Kuti. With every gnarled Hammond Organ solo and huge brass chorale adding to the record’s sense of communal funk, this is another gem in Knitting Factory’s recovery of the work of a great, and singular artistic mind.
