Recorded following a three-week tour of Nigeria’s major cities in 1979, two eminent performers of groundbreaking funk — the African Fela Kuti and the North American Roy Ayers — rounded off their eminent friendship with an LP. Music of Many Colours finds both bandleaders on uncannily funky form, their more experimental sensibilities shot through a prism of complementary energy, bound by an urgency that calls for a community of blackness.
