While Detroit’s DJ Girl has made Austin, Texas a new home, her recent run of sounds still pays tribute to the midwestern tradition of hard and fast dance. DJ Girl’s latest Planet Mu LP Hellworld bangs with abandon to beloved sounds learned from Detroit techno and Chicago juke, but she applies these much travelled tools with a fresh helping of distortion and increasingly clever sound design to make these workouts all her own. Hellworld is at its best when straddling the classics with stuff off the beaten path: the blown-out ‘Lucky’ stakes a claim somewhere between electro and jungle, while the beguiling ‘When U Touch Me’ nearly flirts with hyperpop in its sugar-rush hyperspeed approach.
