Chicago footwork figurehead DJ Manny returns to the label largely responsible for elevating the genre to where it stands today, Planet Mu for a new LP entitled Hypnotized. Pulling from new material as well as sketches that date back to the earliest days of Teklife, Hypnotized effectively plots out where DJ Manny (and ultimately, where the footwork scene by proxy) has been, and where he’s headed next. Manny settles into classic footwork on the soothingly busy ‘You N You’ with DJ Phil, but the previously unheard DJ Rashad collab ‘Ooh Baby’ is anything but a retreat with its dubstep-y sub bass swells and aggressive synth squiggles. Most thrilling of all is ‘Want U Bad’ where Manny pulls sleek, Detroit style techno stabs into his tumbling percussive toolkit to great effect.
