Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Akiko Nakamura was a classic all-rounder. A beauty pageant contestant, actress and singer of some notoriety in Japan, her 1968 LP, cheekily titled Hit Album — now a rarity of early J pop — follows the influence of garage rock and countercultural pop figures like Françoise Hardy, Serge Gainsbourg and Scott Walker, as her effortlessly suave cover of Scott McKenzie’s classic ‘San Francisco’ goes to show.
