MALK was the brains behind Mahatma X’s A Mobtown Suite Volume 1, a record that has been something of a sleeper hit since it dropped in early 2017. On Death From A Love the Philadelphia producer tunnels deeper into the screwball hip-hop style that hung around the edges of that LP. Full of sound and fury, Death From A Love recalls recent work from Oneohtrix Point Never, Celestial Trax and the releases of DJ Shadow’s Liquid Amber imprint. This dystopian beat-suite heralds itself with the mutant Italo-hop of ‘Everything Must Change’, a track that sounds like the original Blade Runner score put through a washing machine. It sets the scene perfectly.
