The Venetian Snares-helmed Timesig imprint fronts the debut album from Toronto’s Joanne Pollock. Having previously collaborated with Snares (aka Aaron Funk) under the moniker Poemss, it is no surprise to find something of the producer’s sound still whispering in Pollock’s solo work. Chiptune meltdowns like ‘You Know I Would Do Anything’ evince an ear for the gnarly and the spectacular that Funk himself would be proud of. Elsewhere the record is both intimate and grandiose, with songs like ‘Carnival’ and ‘Stranger’ bringing to mind Jessy Lanza were she to head into the studio alongside Amanda Palmer. Pollock’s confident alto binds the whole piece together.
