Steve Rutter’s latest release under the B12 alias sees him reaching back to the glory days of the Bristol sound. Working in tandem with singer Yonii, the pair craft three smoky, earthy songs that draw heavily on Tricky and Portishead as well as more contemporary work from artists like Andreya Triana and Gorgon Sound. The feather in this EP’s cap is the manner in which Rutter treats his electronics with a light touch, creating micro-riddims and plaintive synth textures that allow Yonii’s plaintive vocals to take centre stage. That said, the flip contains two dubs of ‘Sympathy’ and ‘Moth’ where Rutter takes the reigns - the latter in particular is a tough dancehall-techno cut that recalls the highpoints of The Bug’s London Zoo.
