Paul and Phil Hartnoll had emerged on the rave scene to pretty much instant success when their 1989 debut single ‘Chime’ caused a country wide buzz, landing them on FFRR and a fatefully rebellious placement on Top Of The Pops. They could have pretty comfortably made 12”s forever, but instead capitalised on that moment by crystallising their talents into a full length album. Orbital birthed over thirty years of bustling techno rhythms, moving from a very DIY home studio to the world stage, and solidified the duo’s presence in UK rave forevermore.

With every track running well past the 5 minute mark, Orbital take the time on these extended workouts to experiment and play with sound, introducing their playful and cheeky take on dance music. ‘The Moebius’ opens by mystifying and making an ode to the techno loop that permeates the album, twitching with clanging, wonky percussion and a kind of robotic collage of gurgling beeps.

It’s the eternally played classics that have become the face of The Green Album: the shreds of ‘Midnight’ erupting from acid stabs and transforming into ethereal gamelan and ritual percussion, the colourful ‘Chime’ with its incessant high pitched fizz, and the similarly whizzing mosquito whistle of ‘Belfast’, the total embodiment of euphoria and dizzy with joy as it closes the album with reverent angelic vocals, riding out on an ecstatic feeling before slowing down to a lush drip. But the deep cuts are just as vital, heaping up layers of drum machines, anthemic rave synths, and repitched vocal clips. Orbital pit instrumental sounds against whips and slaps of percussion, like the crunchy harmonic blasts and imposing brass hits of ‘Desert Storm’ worked into sandy and fizzing manipulations, or the staccato deep house pianos and melodious marimba of ‘Fahrenheit 303’ running into an acidic breakdown.

Coming from the golden age of UK rave, Orbital had morphed the acid house phenomenon into an enduring legacy of their own with their 1991 debut.
