It’s often through our favourite musicians that we discover the music we love: the Late Night Tales series has played an influential part in these conversations, and Four Tet’s eye-opening selection is a prime example for successful taste mapping. Pieces such as ‘Benevolent Incubator’ by London experimental group Icarus convey the mixes’ notion within the individual part of its sum, deconstructing jazz percussion into a drum and bass framework. Kieran Hebden marries the 20th century avant-garde (Terry Riley’s minimalism) with 1960s psychedelia (Manfred Mann), 1990s New York hip hop (RZA’s Gravediggaz group) and the early glitch work of his friend Dan Snaith as Manitoba, taking an almost educational approach (listen to the outro by Glasgow visual artist David Shrighley if you’re still unconvinced).
