Accidental boss and musical mastermind Matthew Herbert finishes his house music series with Part 8. His versatile output has earned him the reputation of pushing the boundaries between the avant-garde and the electronic; his Herbert series bears this signature. Part 1 through Part 5 emerged in the mid 90s, and it was only this year that he resurrected the project. Like its two predecessors, Part 8 indicates a clear compositional approach: Herbert puts emphasis on developing multifaceted melodies. ‘Remember Ken’ showcases this in the form of a soulful vocal lead with a strong chorus. Whereas he goes for a fragmented staccato sound on both ‘The Wrong Place’ and ‘Ticket’, the mallet instrumentals of ‘Her Face’ flow in multiple reverberant layers.
