The setting of My Brutal Life is the brutalist architecture that adorns England’s urban spaces, portrayed as a site not of dreary minimalism but of rich human experience. Oneiric, ethereal wells of ambience flit between moments of dystopia and awe, tracing the smooth concrete blocks of grey and beige that surround the country’s modern cityscapes. Stoic factory percussion and elevated synth drones echo between the buildings in ‘It’s Not Enough’, while glitchy sequences on ‘Postcards For Comfort’ smash and reconstruct solidified rhythms.
