Ripatti is one of the many projects navigated by Sasu Ripatti, a Finnish artist who’s been restlessly active since the mid-90s under many names, with Vladislav Delay the one he’s most often associated with. As Ripatti he rediscovers and reinterprets his love of hip-hop, embracing its archaic and loose structure after decades of working within 4x4-centric settings. That’s not to say that Fun is Not a Straight Line is a hip-hop album. It’s a hyper-creative take on footwork and uptempo club music as done by artists like DJ Rashad, with chopped vox and frenetic 808s blended into his signature, textural approach.
