The time-and-place stamp at the beginning of Horizon speaks to where Sun Ra was at during the early 1970s. His extensive research into ancient African kingdoms meant that Sun Ra simply had to take his Arkestra to “Cairo, Egypt, December 17th, 1971”; the calling of a man who evidently heard many. Horizon sees the Arkestra at their free-improvisational best, matching rousing choruses with flurries of organ and horns operating outside the realms of mere harmony and melody. What they sought was something greater, something beyond this earthly plane. If Horizon is anything to go by, they achieved that coveted lift-off.
