Legendary jazz drummer Klaus Weiss formed a supergroup in 1970 of drummers from all disciplines, a percussion orchestra that laid down extended, explorative grooves as Niagara. While snatches of melody from congas and bells appear, they don’t hang around for too long: it’s clear on Niagara this is the realm of rhythm. Cascading layers of drums quickly build as the album opens, showing off music that slaps, smacks, brushes, swishes, hits, and kicks its way into thunderous flams and high pressure drumrolls, making the group’s debut a dense and deft exercise in tempo.
