There may be untold and unheard numbers of Nicolas Jaar compositions in 2020, but if Telas shows anything at all, it’s that it’s packed to the edges with some of his most challenging ideas. Seated within the camp of Jaar’s more ambient, musique concrète and semi-narrative works, Telas features four extended compositions of electro-acoustic textures, recalling the complex, lateral diagrams that adorn the record’s sleeve. ‘Telahora’ begins in a doom-soaked improvisational jazz territory, its droning electronics and blaring clarinet beset by scurrilous hand percussion, while ‘Telencima’ and ‘Telallás’ are a quieter, more menacing breed, their crackles and pops smacking in and out of digital realms.
