Back in the 1980s, the island of Guadeloupe was punching above its weight in terms of global musical appeal. Zouk, the island dance style, was popular across the world and bands such as Kassav and Zouk Machine had notable followings. Feeling Kréyol were put together by producers Frankie Brumier and Darius Denon with the intention of riding the coattails of zouk’s newfound appeal. The trio of Fabienne Anténor, Leila Thomar and Yolande Fontenard scored moderate success with their single ‘Las Palé’ but administrative problems meant that the similarly-named album failed to reach much of an audience. And what a shame that was - the tracks are all party-starting delights that deserved more attention than they received. Now Strut Records have recognised that and given Las Palé a re-release.
