Belgian label Stroom (Sonoko, Pablo’s Eye) with a reissue from Antwerp musician Patrick Selinger here. First cut in the late ‘80s, the Businessmen EP was one of only a couple of releases that Selinger produced before giving up synthesisers to concentrate wholly on piano playing. Businessmen neatly demonstrates the two sides of Selinger’s art. The title track and its two versions are all moody New Beat jams pitched somewhere between Gary Numan and Einstürzende Neubauten. However, the second half of the record is made up of rich and romantic pieces of piano jazz. It’s almost as if Selinger is soundtracking the businessmen’s days - first capturing their daily grind in song, then providing the music for the upmarket cocktail bars they retire to after hours.
