Melbourne producer Oliver van der Lugt alias Air Max ’97 kicks off his hotly tipped new imprint with the dark FWD grime mutations that are 'Core Work' and ‘Expenditure’. His label, Decisions, is intended as a platform for his hybrid club sound which he had started to shape through his appearance on Trax Couture’s World Series as well as previous outings for London’s Liminal Sounds. Air Max ’97’s arrangements are both functional on the dance floor and yet don't refrain from rhythmical complexity: ‘Core Work’ sucks you in with its multi-track percussive patterns, combining finger snapping with great fanfares and layering synth triplets on top of its numerous rhythms. ‘Expenditure’ is of a more fragmented nature, dropping splashes of bass drum and rim shots in between those elements reminiscent of everyday sounds such as closing doors and droning snares at midnight.
