Seven Davis Jr’s debut album has quietly become one of the most anticipated releases of the year. With early support from Kutmah, Gilles Peterson and Funkineven he’s certainly moving in the right circles. First single ‘Wild Hearts’ laid down the blueprint for the album with echoes of Prince, Theo Parrish and P-Funk and the full length effort doesn’t disappoint. Whilst inhabiting a space very much its own, ‘Universes’ could sit comfortably alongside recent releases from Kendrick Lamar and D’Angelo - all three seek to explore their take on twisted funk and classic soul. Kendrick channeled these influences through hip hop, D’Angelo through neo-soul whereas Seven takes house and disco as his pallette. Standout tracks include ‘Sunday Morning’ and ‘Try Me (I’ll Funk You)’.
