Erol Alkan wins over London-based experimental electronic producer U for his Phantasy Sound imprint. Haven In a Heartfelt World is U’s first outing for the label – and following previous releases on George Fitzgerald’s ManMakeMusic, the mysterious artist sits well in the Phantasy catalogue: U’s melodic, infectious touches – like he presents on the opener – are what he has in common with his label mates such as the boss himself. The slightly roughened and compressed sound aesthetic gives the EP a warm feel. The wonderfully gloomy harmonics of ‘Pilgrimage’ are left untouched by the sharp beat, that occasionally – as on ‘Monogamy’ cuts clearly through the lo-fi surfaces.
