German label raster-noton introduces the debut release from Japanese artist Ueno Masaaki, better known for this work in fashion and television. Vortices features four cuts, or ‘states’, of uncompromising and stern techno: ‘Vortex State’ alternates between pummeling bass and rat-a-tat snares, ‘Exited State’ is a frenzied assault of percussion, ‘Bound State’ explores noisier and sharper textures, while ‘Supersolid State’ is the most rhythmically complex and unpredictable of the lot.
