Martin Maischein and Peter Votava unite as Bolder for Hostile Environment, which sees experimental bastion Editions Mego take on the zeitgeist with six tracks traversing the fertile ground between techno, dub and ambient musics. ‘Sinking Cities’ pits crawling tom attacks against eerily undulating synth pads, while ‘Morbid Funk Ride’ has all the unnerving funk of classic Throbbing Gristle with its lilting, dysfunctional drums and analogue squeals. ‘Residuality’, however, is the highlight, where the absence of percussion allows the duo to show the depth of sound that they can wrench from their stuttering, chewed up instruments.
