With her first LP as Zola Jesus, Nika Roza Danilova’s combination of synth-pop songwriting with industrial noise and abrasive electronics immediately established her as a potent force in independent music. What remains impressive about The Spoils is how, even when the machines appear to be signalling the end of the world, Danilova’s vocals remain calm amid the chaos. The effect is akin to Siouxsie Sioux sparring with Prurient. Please note that the vinyl edition is only ten tracks long.
