We could sit around and argue about the best Boris album for days on end. Which is the heaviest? Which is most conceptually robust? Which has the most amount of riffs, period? There’s a case to be made for each one, but the Japanese drone gods’ third album, 2000’s Flood, has the air of singularity about it. Yes, the rib-shattering tidal wave of guitars that come crashing in midway through the single composition's mammoth 70 minute length are arguably the greatest this Japanese trio have ever laid to tape. However, the glorious dark stuff is also beautifully evened out by a hypnotic minimalism and repetition akin to Steve Reich and Alvin Lucier, painting a portrait of Boris as particularly emotive and experimental stoner doom masters.
