The hypnagogic pop end of the Ghost Box spectrum returns in full force with this downright lovely disc of Beautify Junkyards joints. Side A draws a straight line between contemporary psychedelia and its 1960s origins with a cover of The Incredible String Band’s ‘Painting Box’, a luscious slice of looking-glass wooziness made extra airy by the additional presence of label co-boss Jim Jupp aka Belbury Poly. On the flip side we get a Beautify Junkyards original; ‘Ritual in Transfigured Time’ has the atmosphere of vintage Beach Boys chamber pop, transformed by a snaking synthesiser and the overwhelming feeling of having been recorded in the midst of a dense jungle.
