Translated as Know How? Tell Me - a collaborative album that the Ukrainian pair of Svitlana Nianio and Oleksandr Yurchenko originally self-released in 1996. The duo’s modus operandi here was to combine the sounds of Ukraine’s musical traditions with some of the Western styles that had become available to Ukrainians following the collapse of the Soviet Union. What resulted was a strange record which sat on the border of avant-garde songcraft, contemporary folk interpretation and a sort of warped version of synth-based new-age music. Some other artists are brought obliquely to mind - Rimarimba, Belbury Poly - but really Znayesh Yak? Rozkazhy is the kind of singular record that can only come about through a confluence of artistic invention and historical circumstance. Previously reissued by Ukraine’s Delta Shock label in 2017, Night School’s new edition of Znayesh Yak? Rozkazhy represents the LP’s first release outside of Svitlana Nianio and Oleksandr Yurchenko’s home country.
