The releases of Mike Golding are few and far between — which is why each one feels eventful, the scholar remerging from his solitary study with some new discovery, some new angle in the saturated IDM genre. The Beginning EP marks Golding’s first release under his own name, and one of precious few efforts since 2008’s Last Days of Silence as B12 with Steven Rutter. But you’d think Golding’s seminal contributions to early IDM in the early 90s were only yesterday, given the quiet confidence he exudes here. ‘Game of Chance’ is a calm inhale-exhale, while ‘Boosenbender’ has a jolly swing under its future tech vibes. All in all, this is terrifically human electronic music.
