In contrast to some of his earlier, more rhythmically-driven works, Substrata saw Biosphere create a glacial sound world that was completely beatless. The atmospheres are pensive, meditative, and cinematic (it’s perhaps no wonder Biosphere was also asked to score the psychological thriller ‘Insomnia’ the same year), and the album remains a unique journey today.
