Widely regarded as one of the chief ambient producers the world has ever seen, Biosphere's Departed Glories was a true return to form. Having been entranced by the sounds inside, its sleeve design was one of the most visually compelling record covers of 2016.
Lifting an image from the recently discovered work of Russian photographer Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky. Departed Glories portrayed a 100-year-old image from the photographer, who was a pioneer of colour photography who worked using sheets of glass to project images such as the one of the landscape that adorns the cover. The photo Biosphere discovered in Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky's archive provided a huge influence on the way he produced Departed Glories, as he quotes "the crystal clear yet haunting atmosphere fascinated me".
As a way to cement the importance and impact of the cover image, Smalltown Supersound have created a highly limited, yet strikingly encapsulating, silkscreened print, reduced to a black and white image that goes a long way to portraying the stark, glacial beauty that haunts the record.
Printed in a single run of 30 prints, this is sure to be treasured by those fast enough to catch one.
