You’d think that the archives of Thelonious Monk would be bare by now, but it seems that the great man made so much good music in his heyday that there’s still more to be uncovered. Mønk is the latest Monk rarity to see light of day. These seven takes were recorded at a concert in Copenhagen in 1963. Backed by his famous group of Charlie Rouse, John Ore and Frankie Dunlop, Monk spins out a playful selection of originals and standards in a style that is at once both swinging and avant.
