Synthmeister Max Loderbauer is generally considered one of the world’s premier controllers of the Buchla 200e modular synth - no mean feat, given the instrument’s army of admirers. Having worked as a sort of ambience-sculptor for the likes of Moritz Von Oswald and Ricardo Villalobos, Loderbauer’s slow-reveal as a solo artist continues with Greyland. The six pieces here see Loderbauer coaxing a plethora of sonics from his synth, often letting the depth of feeling of the Buchla’s sounds do the work for him. Tracks like ‘Heliopolis’ and ‘Golden Crescent’ are gorgeous machine ballads, while ‘Artus’ and particularly ‘Who’s That Born’ come closer to the groove music of his collaborators.
