Mike Hadreas has been working the channels of pop and soul via his Perfume Genius persona for seven years now, and it comes as no surprise that his fourth LP sees him take to his craft with maturity and confidence. That said, there is all the vulnerability and soul-baring rawness that one has come to expect from PG - from the bombastic opener ‘Otherside’ to closing torch-song ‘Alan’, the album is as naked as anything on his 2014 breakout Too Bright. Rather, the confidence here is to be found more latently, in the bold choices of instrumentation and his use of pop styles to convey complex emotion in a manner that recalls Kate Bush and Bjork.
