Relentlessly explorative yet meditative and serene, Zach Cooper’s debut always feels as though it is working its way towards something, but destined never to arrive. Cooper blends synths and electronic effects with gentle guitar picking, breezy woodwind and tentative percussion, and The Sentence does well to carve out a unique space for itself. At times it has the feeling of stumbling into a rehearsal room, or combing through someone’s unorganised demos. Whenever any of the tracks threaten to break out into something resembling a tune, it reins itself back in. Melodies arrive without warning, their beauty amplified by virtue of being unexpected. A fascinating, experimental collage that’s sure to achieve its stated aim of inciting stillness in the listener.
