Brooklyn producer Robert DeBois’ debut album grapples with the idea of what it means to be an experimental club producer. As DJ NJ Drone, he makes deconstructed music that’s a perfect fit for Purple Tape Pedigree, the label run by Geng. DeBois’ approach to rhythm is frantic, dizzying and weightless, all at the same time. ‘Syn Stair (No Fountain)’ is cold silence interrupted by swarms of buzzing trance synths, while ’10 Cones’ feels like a club track that’s been hollowed out with a melon baller. The flip is more percussive – ‘Syn Stair (Blind)’ even flirts with convention, though of course it remains elusive. Genre classifications are obsolete when faced with an album this abstract and disruptive.
