After his compelling debut outing for the eminent Opal Tapes last year, New York’s Phil Tortoroli a.k.a. James Place is back with new material for Mexico’s Umor Rex Records. Living On Superstition feeds on Place’s disgust at the headless hedonism laying bare at the doorstep of the Manhattan high rise in which he recorded its evolving soundscapes - with a core of analogue equipment starring the TR-606, Casio SK-1 and SP1200, and dusty field recordings at its soul. The beat-based arrangements feel unpinned, more visceral than structural, even in its restless moments unearthing layers of biding patterns, never denying its fascinatingly ruminant nature.
