L.I.E.S. boss Ron Morelli returns to Hospital Productions with an EP that dispenses with the dance floor allusions of predecessors ‘Spit’ and ‘Backpages’ in favour of a droning, obsessive paranoia. The release distils the analogue fuzz and dirt which have become a L.I.E.S. calling card into something more fractured and beguilingly obtuse. What might once have been warm house synths manifest themselves here as brittle, prickly waves which make their way through landscapes of stunted, trapped beats. ‘Periscope Blues’ marks the moment that Morelli steps out from the shadow of his label and becomes an truly exciting producer in his own right.
